This historical walking path connects the villages of the southernmost Croatian territory, Konavle Valley, and the island of Korčula, and the path is rich with stories and facts from the turbulent history of these areas. While doing the path, the traveler is getting introduced to Austro-Hungarian routes, former railroad track „Ćiro“, and traditional paths that were the lifeline between the seashore and villages in the interior of the coast. En route, we will visit monumental medieval tombstones, ancient Illyrian stone piles, and hillforts in the villages of Dubrovačko Primorje, old French ways, paths of Marco Polo, and historical routes of Dubrovnik's old town. Every day is a new story to which the traveler is being introduced along the road.

This is a walking/hiking tour, however, with a strong historical and cultural background that comes out of the areas the tour is passing through Konavle, Dubrovačko Primorje, Pelješac peninsula, the island of Korčula, and Dubrovnik. The main attraction of the tour are the special locations that are off the beaten tourist path, and still rather close to main destinations, which makes them a must see for any hiking & history special interest group of modern travelers.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival, group accomodation in Cavtat or Konavle area (depends on the group size). Welcome dinner at one of the rural households with domestic food and drinks, the tour is presented in details, with introduction to the area, local customs and history of Konavle valley.

Day 2

Hiking to Snježnica mountain, St. Elijah peak (1234m), story of Austro hungarian monarchy and their influence on this region, in terms of government, agriculture, construction, education. Special emphasis on the road that leads us from the village of Kuna konavoska to mountain peak, built by Austro hungarian government in military purposes, to control the entire valley.

Day 3

Hiking the old railway track to the village of Brotnice in Konavle hills. Continuation of the Austro Hungary monarchy story, but this time with emphasis on the railway, and the popular „Ćiro“ train which operated and connected the area of Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia (in the area where we are right now) and Montenegro. In the village of Brotnice we visit monumental medieval tombstones „Stećci“, and revoke the memories of ancient history, medieval period and Bogumils (their cultural and religious influence to the area). We will walk / drive back through the panoramic roads to the field of Konavle and back to Cavtat.

Day 4

Dubrovačko Primorje (the area between Dubrovnik and Ston (Pelješac peninsula): the tale of ancient history: Illyrians and other former residents of this area of today's Croatia, especially the area of Dubrovačko Primorje, where we will visit their heritage in form of stone piles (form of a grave site) and hillforts (remains of walls that were protection of intruders and shelter from the war). Walking route leads us to the villages of Dubrovačko primorje where these impressive stone monuments are located, majority of them on hill tops.

Day 5

Ston – the story of the Napoleon's influence to this area, The French road. We visit the town of Ston and hike the old French way all the way to the interior of Pelješac peninsula, where the famous vineyards of this „Kingdom of wine“ are located. During the time of French occupation of what is today's southern Croatia (the time when the famous Dubrovnik Republic was abolished), the French built the entire net of roads in order to improve the commercial and military connections in the area of former Dubrovnik Republic, which were underdeveloped due to the fear of Dubrovnik government of foreign invasions from the interior area, what is today's Bosnia and Herzegovina – that was also the logic behind majority of communications and trade of Dubrovnik to be done through maritime merchants.

Day 6

Korčula, the island of Marco Polo – the story about the famous seaman and world traveller Marco Polo whose family origins come from the island of Korčula. The tour of the city and the walking tour to the small village of Pavja luka and back.

Day 7

Dubrovnik: the blue routes. The sea was the main route of Dubrovnik's wealth and fame – the Republic invested very few funds into building the roads, except for the Caravan's way to Dubrovnik hinterland, the „blue path“ was the lifeline of the famous Dubrovnik Republic.

Today's walking path leads us partially via the Caravan way which connected the City with nearby villages, such as Bosanka. From there we will continue to Srđ hill top where the Fort Imperial is located, built by the French – this location and the fort itself is important for Dubrovnik in relation to the close history from the 1990s. We will descent from the hill top on foot back to Dubrovnik, where the tour ends with a goodbye dinner.

Farewell, departure from Dubrovnik.

Guests right to change or cancellation

About cancellations: If a guest wants to cancel the services booked, this should be done in a written form (e-mail, fax or mail). The date when the agency received a written notice of cancellation is the basis for making the bill of cancellation costs in the following way:

65 days + prior to trip departure: Refund of what you have paid (trip deposit) minus EUR 50,00 processing fee per person.

64 - 45 days prior to trip departure: we charge 50% of your payments (trip deposit) and EUR 50 processing fee per person.

44 – 31 days prior trip departure, a trip deposit is not refundable

30 days before trip starts, we require trip balance

30 – 10 days prior to trip departure: we charge 75% of your total payments and EUR 50 processing fee per person.

9 - 0 days prior trip departure: No refund.

In case if we need to cancel the booking of the trip, we will refund you PRICE paid in advance for the trip. We do not refund bank transfer expenses or credit card fee.

Tourist Offer

Activ Retreats offers the services of mediation and booking on behalf of the provider of services and to their benefit and in this way provides accommodation and tour packages for guests in accordance with the information found on the web pages of activretreats.com except in the state of emergency and due to unexpected circumstances. Activ Retreats tries to be as specific as possible when describing their tours and trips. By paying for one or more tours and trips from our program, you assume a legal obligation towards us and you confirm that you agree with the general conditions of providing travel arrangements and services which are here presented to you. All the items from the tour package present a legal obligation both for the guest and the agency. These conditions are the basis for resolving any possible disputes that may occur between us, therefore please be sure to read them.

Booking and Payment

Reservations can be made by sending an e-mail, fax message or by coming to our office or the offices of our partner-agencies, which are authorized to sell the tours and trips we offer. When making a reservation the guest has to supply all the information required. After receiving a confirmation of the booking, we will send you a requisition form for making the advance payment. To make the reservation valid it is necessary to make the minimum advance payment in the amount of 30% of the full price. After the receipt of the advance payment, you will receive a voucher containing all the necessary information about the reservation.

Balance of the Service

For tours and other services from our offer you have to pay the remaining part of the total sum at least 21 days before the service is required. On receipt of the entire amount the agency will mail you the original Voucher to your address. You should hand in this Voucher directly at the representative of the agency upon arrival to Croatia.

Insurance

Please be sure that you have valid travel insurance, our company does not provide travel insurance (but it is possible on request).
Health and Fitness: You should be in good physical health to participate in our trips, with trip confirmation you confirm that you take trip activity (cycling, hiking, or sea kayak…) at your own risk. Please discuss any health and medical questions you may have with your doctor prior to your trip and upon arrival with our representative.

Level: Moderate with demanding parts (40 - 65 km per day)
