Travelling to Nepal by aeroplane
There are no direct flights from Europe, America, South Africa and Australia to Nepal, which can mean that a flight to Nepal must be operated as a connecting flight, it can be a stressful experience at times, especially when connections have long wait times. However, there are a large number of flights from other Asian countries that can fly to Nepal, so even if you cannot get a direct flight, you can quickly get a connecting flight.
Flights to Nepal are available from almost all Asian countries, with the emphasis on flights from China and India. Nepal is a popular destination for both Indian and Chinese, and since there are no entry requirements, especially from India, Nepal is a comfortable place to vacation.
Suppose you are coming to Nepal from a foreign country further away than the Middle East or Turkey (which is now part of Europe). In that case, It is best to travel through India or China as there are more connecting flights from these two countries than anywhere else in Asia. However, with more than 35 different airlines connecting more than 50 cities throughout Asia with Nepal, you have many options for your trip to Nepal.
Travel to Nepal by land
The overland journey to Nepal can only be made from China, via Tibet or from India, as no other countries are bordering Nepal.
Travelling by land can take a long time, but it can be an exciting experience as you have the opportunity to see many things you would not see when flying. Overland trips, especially from China through Tibet, are worth the experience and adventure they can provide.
From China, through Tibet to Nepal
When travelling from China to Nepal, one usually has to travel through the Tibetan Autonomous Region, as this is the only part of China that borders Nepal. To get to Nepal through Tibet, one must first make a reservation for Tibet, as no independent travel is allowed in the region, even for those who only cross the area to get to Nepal.
You have the option of leaving one of Tibet's seven gateway cities when you take the train to Lhasa and then travel to Nepal by land, or you can take a flight to Lhasa from one of the more than a dozen airports in China.
Once you arrive in Lhasa by plane or train, your journey across the Tibetan plateau begins. In general, the shortest trip from Lhasa to Nepal is around seven days. You should therefore include them in your travel plans. The advantage of a journey across the plateau to Nepal is that you can visit and see some of the most amazing places in the world, such as the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple, Gyantse Kumbum and even Mount Everest.
Once you arrive at the Nepalese border crossing at Kyirong port, north of Kathmandu, your tour ends, and your guide and driver will drop you off at the border crossing on the Chinese side of Resuo Bridge, the border crossing to Nepal.
On the other side, at the border post of Rasuwagadhi Fort, you can show your passport and visa to immigration officials or, if you do not already have one, apply for the Nepali visa upon arrival. It is a simple process for which you only need your passport, a passport photo, a completed application form and the corresponding fee. The visa at the border and the airport cost $25 for a 15-day visa, $30 for a 30-day visa and $100 for a 90-day visa. All visas are now multiple-entry, so you can travel back and forth as many times as you like for the duration of the visa.
Once you have passed the checkpoint, you will have to take the bus to Kathmandu, which runs several times a day, except during the monsoon, when you may have to wait for the next bus for some time. Buses from Rasuwagadhi Fort only go to Kathmandu, so if your final destination is another place, you will have to change buses in the capital of the country and take a connecting bus or a flight to your final destination.
From India to Nepal by land
If you are planning to travel to Nepal by land from India, you must have an international driver's license recognized by the Indian government or take a public bus. After that, any international driving license or a standard UK driving license can only be used for driving in India for a limited period. The rules on how long you can drive in India with an international driving permit vary from state to state but are never less than thirty days.
When travelling overland, entry into Nepal can be made through one of the six ports of entry, all of which have nearby railroad stations for rail travellers. For those travelling by bus, there are always buses connecting the nearest major city to the border crossing.
Kakarbhitta, located in the far east of Nepal, is the main point of entry for travellers from the northwestern Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal. From the village on the Nepalese side of the border, some buses regularly go to Kathmandu and other places, and the bus station is within walking distance of the immigration office. If you want to fly to Kathmandu, there are regular flights from Bhadrapur, about 25 kilometres from Kakarbhitta.
Birgunj is the most popular border crossing for travellers to go to Kathmandu, as it is only a bus trip of six to eight hours. On the Indian side of the border is the Raxaul Central Station, which is easily accessible from anywhere in India and is known as the main crossing point into Nepal. Simara is 20 km from Birgunj and has an airport with flights to Kathmandu several times a day.
Belhia, in the district of Bhairahawa in western Nepal, is one of the most famous border crossings for Indian tourists, as it is near the small town of Lumbini, birthplace of Gautama Buddha. Belhia, one of the most important trade links between India and Nepal, is still more than 280 kilometres from Kathmandu, and the daily bus takes about 9 hours. However, flights from the local airport take only 30 minutes.
The other three border crossings, Mohana, GaddaChauki and Jamunaha, are also open for international tourists with on arrival visa service, but less popular due to their remoteness. Mohana and Gadd Chauki are located in the far west of Nepal; there are no flights to Kathmandu and buses take between 16 and 18 hours to get there. Jamunaha, located on the Nepalese side near Nepalgunj, is a major commercial port from India to Nepal and a popular transit point for Indian pilgrims. From the airport of Nepalgunj, there are flights to Kathmandu that take about 1 hour, while buses take between 12 and 14 hours to reach the Nepalese capital.

Physical condition and experience requirements
Manaslu Trek is a challenging trek suitable for passionate hikers who can walk at least 5-6 hours a day. On some days, we may even have to walk 8 to 9 hours. Walking in higher altitudes is more physically demanding than walking in lower elevations. However, if we are in excellent health, average physical condition, positive attitude, self-confidence, and strong determination, we can complete the walk. Exercising and jogging regularly for a few months before the trip is a good idea as it improves our strength and stability. Prior knowledge of hiking is preferred, but technical expertise is not required. It is essential to check with your doctor before booking this hike. Participants with existing diseases such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform us before booking the walk.
Proposed preparation
Exercises Cardiovascular exercises such as running, cycling, jogging, push-ups, and pull-ups for approx. 4-5 days a week for three months before your trip are beneficial.
You should also participate in developing core strength and muscle endurance during strength training.
Hiking on the hills in different weather conditions is excellent preparation for this trip.
If you have access, kayaking and swimming can be a handy way to develop the strength and endurance required for this trip.

Drive from Kathmandu via Arughat to Soti Khola (730m)
The trek starts from a drive from Kathmandu on Prithvi Highway that follows the Trishuli River. The views on the road are unlike anything you have ever seen -traditional villages, terraced fields, white water rivers, lush forests, giant mountains - including Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang, and Ganesh Himal. We will continue our bus ride until we reach Soti Khola. Soti Khola is the gateway to the Manaslu trek. We will be spending our first night in the trek region at Soti Khola.
Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Soti Khola (730m) to Machha Khola (890m)
This will be the first day on the trails. We wake up at Soti Khola, prepare for a long day trek, and head to Maccha Khola. The path itself is stunning, with waterfalls crossing our way. You need to be careful as the path has sharp ascents and descents. We will also be passing through Sal forests, walking by the side of towering cliffs, and at times you might encounter mules on the path. Our path will take us through Khursani village and to Lububesi Gurung settlement and finally to Machha Khola.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Machha Khola (890m) to Doban (1,070m)
We have not gained much height, which you can tell from the sub-tropical vegetations lying around the trek. However, be prepared to traverse some ups and downs. You will be crossing two major rivers- Tharo Khola and Machha Khola. After crossing Machha Khola on a suspension bridge, we will be entering Tatopani, but we continue on our path that passes through forests and finally to Doban. Doban means the confluence of two rivers in Nepal, and sure enough, Doban lies at the confluence of Shari Khola and Sarpu Khola.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Doban (1,070m) to Philim (1,570m)
After breakfast at Doban, we continue through our journey to reach Philim by the end of the day. The trek starts with a sharp climb to Louri and continues until Thado Bharyang below Jagat. Then we cross a river to reach Jagat - a Tibetan-style settlement, and we cross another river to reach Philim - another Gurung village.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Philim (1,570m) to Deng (1,860m)
We continue our trek northwards through terraced millet fields eventually reaching Ekle Bhatti. Our path becomes steeper, passing through sharp gorges and crossing Budhi Gandaki River. We continue on the banks of Budhi Gandaki and then through bamboo forests that lead to the Deng Khola river. Then, we cross this river to reach Deng - our destination.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Deng (1,860m) to Ghap (2,250m)
Our journey continues after a hearty breakfast intending to reach Ghap. The route takes us through Bihi Phedi and Bihi, but it starts as a short descend followed by a sharp ascend that leads to Rana Bridge. We continue further through the pine forest and cross a bridge to reach Bihi Phedi. As soon as you cross the bridge, you will realize that you have entered a Buddhist region by seeing Mani walls and other portraits of different gods and goddesses. You will cross another suspension bridge before you finally make it to Ghap.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Ghap (2,250m) to Namrung (2,660m)
From Ghap, our next destination will be Namrung. The route takes us through dense fir, rhododendron, oaks, and bamboo forest, past steep ascends, suspension bridges, and stone stairs to Namrung. Around Namrung, you will get to see large barley fields.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Namrung (2,660m) to Lho (3,180m)
We continue on our journey after having breakfast, intending to reach Lho. Our path takes us through the beautiful Lihi village, and then we will cross a stream that originates from Lindanda Glacier to reach Sho while enjoying the views of Simnang Himal (6251m). However, we will be pressing ourselves ahead to reach Lho - a culturally rich village adorned in prayer flags, Mani Walls, Chortens, and other stupas.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Lho (3,180m) to Samagaun (3,530m)
From Lho, we start the trek early morning and head to Samagaun. Our path passes through a forest and reaches Shyala village. The Shyala village sits surrounded by agricultural fields and has several wooden resting places. As we move ahead, we will be crossing a small stream that drains the Punggen glacier and reach a flat village called Samagaun. Samaguan is the closest village to Manaslu Base Camp.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Rest Day in Samagaun
During this trek, we acclimatize at Samagaon to adjust to the thin air as we would have reached a higher elevation. We will not stay idle but will explore Samagaun. Sure enough, you will be noticing the lifestyles of the locals and experiencing their culture. Moreover, there are other options such as a hike to Manaslu Base Camp or Birendra Lake or visiting Pungyen Monastery. Pungen Monastery lies in the south of Samagaon and is about two and a half hours hike away. It is hidden behind the ridge in front of Manaslu and provides tremendous views of the glaciers. Birendra Tal is a glacial lake at 3,450m where ice blocks tumble into the lake with thunderous displays. Samagaon is indeed an interesting place for acclimatization.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Samagaun (3,530m) to Samdo (3,875m)
The trek today is comparatively more interesting and pleasant. We will be crossing the pasture areas and ascending to the valley. The trail leads us to forests with juniper and birch. As we reach down the Budhi Gandaki river, we will cross the wooden bridge over Budhi Gandaki and climb up steeply across the river. We will be getting amazing views of mountains, especially Manaslu, as we reach Samdo - a Tibetan refugee village. Upon reaching Samdo, we will also explore this village and the surrounding hills.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Samdo (3,875m) to Dharamsala (4,480m)
We walk down the Samdo edge through fields and old Mani walls, crossing the wooden bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River. We will walk past Athahra Saya River and then along the Larke River. You will be noticing the Mani walls, and the prayer flags hung on the route, signifying the closeness of the Larkya La Pass. Then comes Larkya Glacier, which is unquestionably magnificent. As we enjoy the view, we further trek around the valley of Salkha Khola and climb up again to reach the stone guest house (4,450m). The stone guest house is not a lodge, but it is a kind of community dormitory better known as Dharamsala or Larkya La Phedi. This day would be a great day as we will get amazing views of the Larkya Glacier and Mt. Manaslu.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek to Bhimtang (3,720m) by crossing Larkya la Pass (5,160m)
The exciting part of the journey awaits us, as we will be trekking around the Manaslu circuit, crossing the Larkya La Pass (5,100m). After early morning breakfast, we will leave Dharamsala as it will be a long trek. The weather is the most important factor as the weather decides if the trek becomes more challenging due to strong winds or storms. We begin by crossing the moraine, and descending to a small lake. The trail begins to be rough and unclear as we cross the south of a steep grassy slope. Our route stays on the moraine to an edge, marked by two landmarks. The prayer flags mark the route giving us a sense of trek direction. We descend carefully to four frozen lakes, then finally climb a steep trail to the Larkya La Pass. From the pass, you can enjoy the panoramic views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and the great Annapurna II. The marvelous trail takes us to the top of the moraine, heads west, and makes steep, rough bends. We further cross the moraine then descend gently to another grassy moraine at 4,450m. As we descend, the trail becomes easier to walk in, as we arrive at a small meadow. The valley begins to widen as we near the large meadow, Mani walls, and small houses that indicate we have reached Bhimtang.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Bhimtang (3,720m) to Gho (2,550m)
Last day's trek must have been tough, but you can wake up assured that today's trek will not be very taxing. You start by descending to Budhi Gandaki River and cross it to enter the rhododendron forest that open to Karche - a cultivated area near the top of Budhi Gandaki valley. You continue along the river bank to reach Gho.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Trek from Gho (2,550m) to Dharapani (1,910m)
This will be the last day on the trails. After waking up at Gho, we head to Dharapani. The route descends so the trek should be easy. You will be trekking through many fields and pastures and arrive at Tilje - a large Gurung settlement. This village is famous for brandy. However, we continue forward passing several Mani walls to reach Thonje village and then enter Dharapani village.
Breakfast & Overnight at Local Lodge
Drive to Besisahar (760m) - then drive back to Kathmandu
Today, we will be our last day on the road. After early morning breakfast, we leave Dharapani to Besishar on a local bus, which will approximately take about six to seven hours. The drive will be scenic as we will pass many villages, Marsyangdi River, Bhulbhule town, and Khudi. We should be reaching Besisahar before 3 pm to catch the last bus to Kathmandu. If we are late, we will have to extend a day in the itinerary. After catching a bus that takes us back to Kathmandu, on our way, we will see the Marsyagdi River meeting the Trishuli River, as we head east on the Prithivi Highway. The drive allows you to appreciate beautiful and natural scenery - including the terraced lands and high peaks. Check-in at hotel in Kathmandu booked on own.

Other useful tips:
Before starting the trip, the question arises in everyone's mind. In terms of difficulty, this hike is moderately strenuous. The trail passes through the spectacular Larke Pass, which is located 5,160 meters above sea level. Previous trekking experience or hiking habits are beneficial for this trek. The physical pre-workout helps the hiker; it has a lot to do with the Manaslu Trek Circuit as it is one of the most challenging treks in Nepal that takes you through the remote area of the Mountain region.
Sorry to say but unfortunately, the answer is no; in the restricted trekking areas of Nepal, at least two people are required to get a permit. Therefore, according to state law, only group trekking is possible. Hence, you need to have a friend to go for a walk with or join the other groups to get permission to enter the area. Please write to us with your planned travel date to receive more information about the hike and the fixed group departure.
The answer is NO. You cannot hike as a lone hiker as per Nepalese government rule. A registered trek guide must accompany you and a government registered company must organize your tour while you are touring these restricted areas. We have guides and porters if you are a low budget hiker.
The Manaslu Trek starts in Soti Khola and ends in Besisahar. You can travel to and from Kathmandu by local bus or private jeep.
It takes 8 to 9 hours by car from Kathmandu to Soti Khola. On your return, it will take 6 to 7 hours from Besisahar to Kathmandu.
However, a private vehicle is a better alternative than the big bus for persons who want more comfort. The bus ride also takes longer.
