 What should I bring with me to South Africa?

Casual, comfortable clothes are essential! The morning game drives will be colder than you think, so please bring warm clothing. Nighttime and early morning game drives can also be chilly, so pack a warm hat, scarf, gloves, and a fleece or jacket. 

Wear clothes in khaki, green, beige, and neutral colors. We suggest keeping to light, neutral colors, but not white—it will get dirty and dusty very quickly.

Long-sleeved shirts that offer protection from the sun and mosquitoes.

T-shirts.

Flip flops for walking around or using the pool.

Bathing suit.

Shorts or a light skirt.

Jeans or safari trousers for evenings and cooler days.

Jackets and sweaters for early morning and late afternoon game drives.

A lightweight waterproof jacket in case of rain.

Remember, sunglasses and lots of sunscreen are essential, and insect/mosquito repellent is also necessary.

A wide-brimmed safari hat to protect your face and neck.

Long trousers and long-sleeved tops are best, as they protect you from the harsh sun during the day and mosquitoes at night.

Take comfy, practical footwear for daytime—the roads are dusty and uneven—and make sure you have sturdy, closed-in walking shoes or trainers for trekking in the bush. 

Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, moisturizer, and lip salve.

Binoculars and camera equipment.

Leave your valuables and expensive jewelry at home. You really won't need them.

Power converter – a universal converter can be purchased from Amazon.

Please pack light. The small planes we will take have weight restrictions. A soft-sided rucksack is more practical than a hard suitcase—it's easier to fit into small planes or transfer vehicles. Using packing cubes can help keep your belongings tidy while compressing the volume, too. Internal flights often have much lower baggage limits than your international carrier. 

You may also like to carry a solar-powered charger to boost your battery when out and about—you don't want to miss that great photo opportunity!

Visa and Vaccines

You do not need a visa for South Africa, and no vaccines are required to enter. Please consult with your physician or local travel clinic to learn more about recommended vaccines.

Itinerary

Day 1- October 15, 2024

Arrival into Johannesburg, South Africa

Welcome to South Africa! As you exit with your bags, please look for a sign. The hotel is at the airport, so it will be a convenient stop to rest and relax before your departure flight to Senalala the following morning. Your retreat officially starts at the welcome dinner at the hotel.

Please note Amy arrives in Johannesburg at 10 AM. If you arrive before this time, you can walk across the street to check in to your room at the InterContinental Johannesburg O.R.Tambo Airport, which is located just opposite of the Int'l Arrivals Hall O.R. Tambo International Airport.

Please note that your room is not guaranteed to be ready until 2 PM, so you may wish to book an extra night if you arrive early to ensure a room when you arrive. Amy can assist you with this if needed.

7:00 PM - Dinner at the hotel, followed by a brief group orientation.

Day 2 - October 16, 2024

Johannesburg to Senalala Safari Lodge

Breakfast at the hotel at your leisure

This morning, you will board a flight from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit Airport (Kruger National Park Area). The flight departs at 10:30 AM and takes only 55 minutes.

On arrival at Hoedspruit Airport, you will be met and transferred to Senalala Lodge for your 5-night stay at this small fantastic safari lodge. Set in a vast wilderness area, your visit will be hosted by some of the industry's most professional and respected people, who will make your stay a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This retreat will be for our group only, with a maximum of only 12 guests. It is a highly private experience, whether on a game drive, eating delicious food, or relaxing with a beverage of your choice in the various tranquil areas of the camp. At any time, you can help yourself to any beverage, hot or cold, just as you would if you were in your own home.

Your stay at Senalala includes luxury accommodations, twice-daily game drives, walking safaris, meals, a diverse selection of South African wines, beers, selected spirits (domestic and imported), refreshments, WiFi, limited laundry, and access to all the amenities.

Day 3 - October 17, 2024

Game Drives & Relaxation

6:00 AM- Morning game drive.

Breakfast when we return from the game drive.

Game drives mixed with relaxation and enjoying the amenities of this beautiful lodge. Guests can go out on a game drive twice a day (approximately 3 hours long each) in open safari vehicles that offer unobstructed views in all directions. The animals roam free, and we view them in this open habitat. In exceptional circumstances, we will take our vehicles off-road for unusual sightings, providing you with a unique safari experience to get close to Africa’s wildlife.

Afternoon game drive followed by dinner ( Approx. 3 hours )

Day 4 - October 18, 2024

Game Drive & Bush Walk

6:00 AM- Morning game drive.

Breakfast when we return from the game drive.

2:00 PM- Lunch

This afternoon, we will enjoy a bush walk with our highly trained guide ( optional)

Senalala has a reputation for its team of highly skilled guides, who have extensive experience in leading walking safaris that allow for the opportunity to experience the bush from a very different perspective. This excursion includes studying animal tracks and signs and learning more about the ecology of the surrounding environment. While walking, there is always a chance of tracking and finding animals on foot. Experience nature in its primal form – a unique way to experience the bush and a great addition to your safari. Walking Safaris are done in the morning or afternoon as a substitute for a game drive. This adventure lasts between 2 and 2 1/2 hours, and guests should be in good physical condition (able to walk between 5-7 km).

Day 5 - October 19, 2024

Game Drives & Relaxation

6:00 AM - Morning game drive. Our first game drive of the day leaves soon after sunrise, with a stop for coffee or tea and a snack in the bush.

Breakfast when we return from the game drive.

Free time to rest and relax as you wish.

2:00 PM - Lunch

Afternoon game drive. The second game drive departs in the late afternoon with a stop for sun-downers, where guests can watch the sunset over the African horizon. After the sun sets, we continue with a drive back to the lodge aided by a spotlight for night sightings.

Dinner at the lodge.

Day 6 - October 20, 2024

Game Drives & Relaxation

6:00 AM — Morning game drive. Every day at Senalala offers you a unique opportunity to see and experience something different while maintaining some structure in your day.

Breakfast when we return from the game drive.

Free time to rest and relax as you wish.

2:00 PM - Lunch

Afternoon game drive followed by dinner at the lodge.

Day 7 - October 21, 2024

Flight back to Johannesburg

After breakfast, we will depart from Senalala Safari Lodge to Hoedspruit Airport for our flight back to Johannesburg. Flight time is around 1 hour.

Departing 14:20 Hoedspruit(HDS) arriving 15:25 Johannesburg(JNB)

Total duration 01h05m, Direct flight

We will arrive back around 1:00 PM. Please plan on taking your departing flight home anytime after 4:00 PM. Your retreat officially ends after breakfast.

Cancellation Policy

In the event of trip cancellation before the 90-day or 30-day payment deadline, the deposited amount is non-refundable. However, any payments made before these final payment deadlines are fully refundable minus the non-refundable deposit. Trip cancellations requested after the final payment deadlines listed above are non-refundable, and guests are encouraged to file a claim with their travel insurance for reimbursement.

In the unlikely event Activ Retreats cancels the retreat, guests will be provided a full 100% refund of their booking. Lastly, we partner with several third-party booking platforms with separate deposit and cancellation policies. Please refer to their specific cancellation policies if booking through a third-party partner.
