Surfing Holidays in the beautiful North of Spain

Where the water’s a little bluer, the sun shines a little brighter and the clocks go that little bit slower than elsewhere in the world, you’re in Cantabria, the beautiful North of Spain. We’ve opened our surf camp doors here in Oyambre in the summer of 2016 and have since hosted more than 2000 surf holiday guests.

In our surf camp here in Oyambre we host small and larger groups of friends, solo travellers as well as families. In true Star Surf Camps’ fashion, our surf camp team live onsite together with our surf holiday guests.

Camping Rodero, our Campsite

Our surf camp is part of a larger campsite which also hosts other surf camps and holidaymakers. The campsite facilities include a restaurant and Café with WiFi, kiosk, swimming pool, basketball/ multisport court and several shower blocks. Facilities in our surf camp include a shaded eating and entertainment area, a raised, covered chill area with cushions that turns into an outdoor cinema, hammocks, a surfboard and wetsuit storage area as well as a large yoga deck that overlooks the mountains.

The Beach, Playa de Oyambre

Our local surf beach is a short, ten-minute walk from our surf camp. During the summer months, the northern Spanish coastline offers great wave conditions for surf beginners and intermediate surfers alike. Hit by consistent summer swells that carry gentle rolling waves, Oyambre Beach is ideal for first-time surfers and everyone wanting to improve their existing surf skills.

Learn to Surf in great Beginner Waves

The Oyambre area is a great place to learn to surf. In the summer months, the northern Spanish coast around Santander is hit by consistent swells that bring gentle rolling waves to our local, Oyambre Beach.

With our most popular surf holiday packages here in Oyambre, our surf camp guests receive a 6 session surf course. It includes 5 sessions of surfing (90 minutes each) the gentle waves of Playa de Oyambre, the beach just outside the surf camp, as well 1 sessions of surf theory (also 90 minutes) in the surf camp, teaching you about water safety, rip currents and the intricacies of Spanish beach breaks.

Surf Course & Surf Instructors

During your weeks’ surf course, our surf instructors teach you the essentials of surfing. These include a safety introduction to wave and beach awareness, how to paddle into waves, catching waves, standing up and controlling your surfboard. We use soft surfboards, called ‘foamies’. Their soft foam construction means these surfboards are incredibly buoyant, enabling beginners to catch waves easily. Their dimensions ensure that they are very stable in the water, making it much easier for surf beginners to stand up.

All our surf instructors are qualified, fully licensed in the country they teach surfing in and also have a lifeguarding qualification. They have a good understanding of the wave conditions and local surf spots and are always ready to lend you a helping hand. The maximum group size for our surf lessons is eight surfers per one instructors plus one surf assistant if required. All use of surf equipment, surfboard, leash and wetsuit, is included during surf lessons time.

Your surf lessons start on Sundays. On your first day, all surfers meet at the surf tent in the morning for an introduction and wetsuit allocation. We divide all surfers into beginner and intermediate groups. Your surf lesson times are displayed on our notice board at reception.

Revitalize Your Mind With Yoga

Yoga has swept surfers off their feet with most professional surfers practising yoga to help improve flexibility, core strength and surfing performance. After a long day surfing, yoga is a fantastic way to improve your flexibility and strengthen your body.

We have built a large covered yoga platform above our surf camp with views over the mountains. We run a weekly yoga schedule with two yoga sessions per day (not Saturdays). Our enthusiastic and professional yoga instructors make their sessions fun and accessible to ‘Yogis’ of all levels. Once a week, we go down to the beach for an evening yoga session at sunset.

Join our yoga sessions here in Oyambre and see the positive effects of yoga for yourself, your body and your surfing. Choose from 3, 5 or 10 yoga sessions per surf camp week. We provide exercise equipment during the sessions free of charge.

Relaxed & Social Entertainment for All Ages

We’ll start your surf camp week in Oyambre with a Welcome Evening. After dinner, our surf camp team staff will introduce themselves and give you a short introduction to the surf camp and your surf holiday week ahead. Afterwards we’ll serve you some well-deserved welcome Sangrias and you get to meet your fellow surf campers over games.

Sunset Walk & Jam Sessions

On Monday evenings after dinner in the surf camp we all head out to one of our favourite spots, a restaurant/bar on the cliff tops overlooking the sea – the perfect place to enjoy some drinks and watch the sunset. If it’s a cloudy evening, we get our guitars and instruments out for a jam session in the surf camp. A shout out to all musicians and singers among our surf camp guests: bring your instruments, we’d love to hear you play and jam with us!

Bilbao Trip & Surf Movie Night

Every Tuesday, we organise a trip to Bilbao. You can find more information on this day trip away from the surf camp in our “Activity”-section. All guests staying behind can join us in our outdoor cinema for a surf movie night with popcorn.

Quiz Night & Fiesta Fiesta

After dinner on Wednesdays, we get together for some drinks in the surf camp and you get to test your trivia knowledge during our Pub Quiz which is always great fun. Everyone who fancies a boogie and night out afterward can come along to ‘Fiesta Fiesta’, Comillas’ liveliest bar.

Ping Pong Tournament & Sunset Beach Games

On Thursday evenings, we challenge our surf camp guests to take on our team: show us your ping pong skills in our surf camp tournament or games at the beach.

Award Ceremony & Goodbye Drinks

We celebrate your last night in the surf camp with our surf award ceremony. After dinner, our surf team give out the week’s highly desired “Best Wave” and “Best Wipeout” award. We see out the night with music and drinks.

Time for Yourself & New Friends

Although there’s plenty going on in the surf camp, we want to make sure you’ll also get time to yourself to relax and unwind. We’ve got hammocks dotted around the surf camp and a shaded chill area with cushions to relax in. Water, tees and coffees are available on the main deck throughout the day.

Our reception is open for check-ins from 16:00 o’clock on Saturdays. At check-in, you receive a warm welcome, a surf camp wristband and a tour of the surf camp and campsite. One of our team will show you to your tent. On arrival, we also collect a 30 € tent deposit in cash which you’ll get back at checkout. If you’re arriving before 16:00 o’clock, you can leave your luggage with us in the surf camp and explore the area.
