The tropical island of Mauritius sets the perfect environment for sun, sea and its exclusive white sandy beaches. Our wellness retreat facilities are located a few minutes walk (200 metres) from the famous beach of Trou Aux Biches village. The local beaches are surrounded by strong reefs all around, providing great lagoons for snorkeling, long stretch of beaches (8 kms) for trekking all day and shallow and warm sea water for great swims. In February, the sea water warms up to 29 degrees - almost therapeutic and difficult to come out.
The ocean route is probably the next best thing to do from Trou Aux Biches, cruising from north west of the island along the coastal roads all the way to the east, where you can take a boat trip to the island of Ile Aux Cerfs. The trip can also be done on scooter, which allows for reaching each and every beach on the road. There is around a dozen of beaches on the ocean route - each quite different from each other, some with sandy beaches, rocky beaches, mediteranean blue water, deep blue water, forest beaches, etc. Around the north east to east coast of Mauritius, the beaches are great spots for surfing, kite surfing and parasailing.
We also have a few boat trips organised in the area some to see dolphins and others to visit small tropical islands around Mauritius. For as little as EUR 40, you can spend a whole day visiting three of these islands off the north coast of Mauritius - Le Coin De Mire, Flat Island and Gabriel Island. These islands are totally wild, uninhabited and most untouched landscapes around Mauritius. All of them are home to some amazingly pristine beaches and species like the national bird, the paille-en-queue. These tours include pick up and drop off from the wellness retreat facilities, free drinks, free open lunch buffet, snorkeling accessories, etc - an absolute must ...
The wellness retreat centre is also close to the popular tourist attraction Pamplemousses Botanical Garden. Pamplemousses is the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere and for a long time, it ranked third among all the gardens that could be admired over the surface of the globe. After London's Kew Gardens, the Pamplemousses Garden is one of the world's best botanical gardens. The centrepiece of the gardens is a pond filled with giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, native to South America. It also hosts a wide variety of plants and flowers covering an area of almost 37 hectares.
The capital city of Mauritius, Port-Louis is only 30 minutes away by bus from the wellness retreat facilities. Bus fare hardly costs a Euro to get to Port-Louis. Known for its old architecture and harbour of Mauritius, Port-Louis is a great city to stroll around, providing an excellent history of the French and British colonisations.
The Natural History Museum in Port-Louis contains some fascinating artefacts, such as early maps of the island and paintings of Mauritius's original fauna – including, of course, the dodo. The bell and a cache of Spanish coins from the wreck of the St Géran are also on display. The ship's demise in 1744, off the north east coast of Mauritius, inspired the famous love story Paul et Virginie by Bernardin de St-Pierre.
Mauritius was in fact the fifth country in the world, after Great Britain, Brazil, Switzerland and North America, to introduce stamps; thus making us the 2nd country of the southern hemisphere and the 1st English colony in September 1847.
They were the famous blue and red penny stamps with the face of Queen Victoria, amongst the rarest in the world. Two of them can be found at the Blue Penny museum of the Caudan Waterfront.
Other things to do and see in Mauritius are the central market (Victorian style architecture), Caudan Waterfront - the new city of Port-Louis, China Town, Fort Adelaide - the Citadel, Champ de Mars race course, the old Cathedral Church, etc.
The other main landmarks of Mauritius are mostly in the south of the island, which are covered by the island tours organised by the wellness retreat centre. We have carefully set up two island tours to visit all the famous landmarks of Mauritius. Some of these places are quite unique in the world like Chamarel, the seven coloured earth - a volcanic phenomena producing seven different shades of earth, Le Morne Brabant - an undersea waterfall, another spectacular volcanic phenomena of Mauritius, the Grand Bassin sacred lake with a 108 foot statue of God Shiva and the 108 Shivlings temple, Black River Gorges National Park, Alexander Falls, and Trou Aux Cerfs volcano. (Note tickets to parks and the landmarks of Mauritius are not included in the island tours.)
