A long trekking journey, the Mera and Island Peak Climb with Amphu Laptsa Pass begins with a short flight to Lukla. From there, the trail then ventures deep into the Dudh Koshi, the Hinku River, and the Imja River valleys towards thrilling foothill base camps of two of the most popular climbing peaks in Nepal- the Mera Peak and the Island Peak. Finally, you will also summit the peaks, navigating your way through the snowy slopes filled with crevasses and hollow grounds. Using climbing equipment like ropes, crampons, ice axes, and karabiners among others, you will follow your Sherpa guide uphill towards the summit of the peaks.

Moreover, the trip also includes crossing one of the three major high mountain passes of the Khumbu- the Amphu Laptsa. Situated at an elevation of above 5,000 meters, the pass requires a strenuous climb up and downhill. As such, this trekking trip is one of the challenging journeys in Nepal. It requires a good level of technical skills and prior trekking and mountaineering experience to pull off successfully.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu |1300m| transfer to hotel

You may arrive in Kathmandu at any time. Upon your arrival, you will be welcomed by one of our airport representatives who will help you get transferred to your Hotel in the city. There are no planned activities for the day, thus you may check into your Hotel and relax. Overnight stay at the Hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2

Trip preparation

This day is reserved for trip preparation. Our guide will make sure that you have everything you need for the trip tomorrow. If not, you can also rent/hire/buy equipment from the many shops near your Hotel. If you wish, you can also have a guided sightseeing tour of the city's major UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well. Overnight stay at the Hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 3

Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla |2,840m|trek from Lukla to Chutang |3,350m|

You will be transferred to the airport early in the morning for your Lukla flight. The short Lukla flight presents amazing views of the mountain peaks. From Lukla, you will make your way to Chutang, passing through a jungle trail and crossing a bridge over the Handi Khola. Along the way, you will reach Surkhe village. From here, the path continues south and crosses the Chutok-La Pass before reaching Chutang. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Chutang.

Day 4

Trek from Chutang to the base of Zatrwa La pass |4,100m|

From Chutang, you will proceed further along the valley floor to reach the Zatrwa La foothill. It is a steady trek uphill and the land is filled with beautiful pastures and views of the mountain peaks like the Kusum Kanguru, the Ama Dablam, and Lhotse among others. Overnight stay at the base.

Day 5

Trek from Base of Zatrwa La to Kothe |3,800m|via Zatrwa La Pass

Crossing the mountain pass, you will ascend-and-descend along the blooming hillocks of pine and juniper and cross terrace farms to reach Kothe. The distant views of the mountain peaks like Everest, the Ama Dablam, the Lhotse Peak, Nuptse, and many others against the valley's green contrast present a great sight. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Kothe.

Day 6

Trek from Kothe to Thangnak |4,600m|

Trekking along the Hinku Khola, you will be in constant view of the Mera Peak today. Passing by the settlement of Gondishung, you will make your way to Hinku Dragka. Along the way, you will also pass by the Lungsumba Gompa where a stone inscription can be found that includes information on Mera Peak. A short hike from the Gompa then led to Thangnak. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Thangnak.

Day 7

Rest and acclimatization at Thangnak

This day is reserved for acclimatization. You will have a relaxing day at Thangnak today, exploring the village. The settlement of Thangnak is mainly occupied by the ethnic Sherpa where you can where experience their lifestyle. The village also has many Gumbas and small chortens with Mani stone walls. It presents amazing views of the Mountain Peaks as well. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Thangnak.

Day 8

Trek from Thangnak to Khare |5,000m|

Further from Thangnak, the path follows a lateral moraine of the Dig Glacier. The site presents spectacular views of the Charpate Himal. You will follow the path to the snout of the Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers. From here, you will steadily climb up to the Khare village from where you can get good views of the northern face of Mera Peak. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Khare.

Day 9

Trek from Khare to Mera High Camp |5,780m|

Walking through a boulder-strewn terrain, you will follow the path steeply uphill to reach the Mera Peak Base Camp. From the camp, you will continue further ahead through the Mera La Mountain Pass to reach the Mera High Camp. The path is rocky and can be perilous if there is snow. Trekking to the top of the rock band marked by a cairn, you will hike ahead for High Camp. Along the way, you can enjoy breath-taking views of the Everest Peaks, like Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Overnight stay at Mera High Camp.

Day 10

Summit to Mera Peak |6,461m.| and return to base camp |5,200m|

This is one of the important days of the entire trip. You will be summiting Mera Peak today. Waking up early at 2 in the morning, you will make your way up the glacier. Following the path onto the ridge, you will continue, up the slope that starts to thin out. The Ridgeline gets left behind at the sight of the Mera Peak comes into view. With the help of ropes and other climbing equipment, you will begin your climb. Finally, as you reach the summit, you can take in mesmerizing views of the neighboring Everest peaks. After enjoying the sight and the achievement, you will slowly retrace your steps back down the summit. Overnight stay at base camp.

Day 11

Trek from Mera Peak Base Camp to Hinku valley

From the base camp, you will follow the pathway back down the valley, passing through the coruscating woodlands once again. The trip is mostly downhill and is ever-present with amazing Himalayan sights. Overnight stay at the guesthouse.

Day 12

Trek from Hinku valley to Panch Pokhari |5,200m|

Deep into the emerald landscapes of the Hinku valley, the terrain is embedded with glacial lakes. Following the rough pathway, you will trek through the pastures and the rock-strewn acreages towards Panch Pokhari. Overnight stay at the guesthouse.

Day 13

Acclimatization at Panch Pokhari

This is another day reserved for acclimatization. Today, you can enjoy the lakeside view of the terrains and also relax at the beautiful site that the five lakebeds present. The landscape is quite serene and the horizons are filled with wonderful views of Mera Peak. Overnight stay at the guesthouse.

Day 14

Trek from Panch Pokhari to Amphu Laptsa La Base Camp |5,400m|

You will be trekking through the remote acreages of the valley to reach the Amphu Laptsa Base Camp today. This is an extremely off-beaten trail and it is very uncommon to see any other trekkers here along the journey. Steeply ascending just beyond the lake, you will be traversing along the wilderness of the Hinku valley. Finally, you will reach the base camp. Overnight stay at the Amphu Laptsa Base Camp. 

Day 15

Trek from Amphu Laptsa La Base Camp to Chhukung |4,750m| via Amphu Laptsa La Pass |5,700m|

Waking up early in the morning to cross the pass, you will start the day by making your strenuous trip uphill. The trip is laden with rough terrains and a straining uphill climb. When you reach the top of the pass, you can get mesmerizing sights of the sprawling Hinku valley and the distant mountain peaks on the horizon. After taking in the views, you will start your descent back down towards Chhukung. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Chhukung.

Day 16

Trek from Chhukung to Island Peak High Camp |5600m|

Following the pathway that travels uphill through alpine woods, you will make your way to the Island Peak Base Camp. The trek is filled with changing terrains altering from pasturelands to snowy fields. You can also see many yaks grazing in the pastures, with cliffs occasionally hinting at the sight of the elusive Himalayan Thar. The horizons are also decorated with views of the rising peaks. Overnight stay at Island Peak Base Camp. 

Day 17

Summit Island Peak |6,189m.| and back to Chhukung |4740m

This is another one of the important days of the trip. Waking up early in the morning, you will climb your way to the summit of Island Peak. The snowy terrain is filled with crevasses and hollow grounds, so you will follow your Sherpa guide carefully as he leads the way. Climbing over metal rungs of ladders placed over deep crevasses and trudging up the slopes with crampons on your boots, you will finally reach the summit. Views of the surrounding peaks dramatically present themselves from the top. After taking in the sights, you will carefully navigate your way back down to base camp and towards Chhukung. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Chhukung.

Day 18

Trek from Chhukung to Dingboche |4,410m|

Trekking downhill past smaller settlements, you will be making your way back to Dingboche. The terrain changes from snowy glacial sludge to greener pastures and alpine woods. The lower ends of the valley then give way to Dingboche- the summer valley of the Khumbu region. Dingboche also presents amazing views of Island Peak. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Dingboche.

Day 19

Trek from Chhukung to Debouche |3760m|

Following the winding pathway, you will trek through the vast grasslands and narrow cliffs towards the ridgeline above the valley. The Imja River flows below the ravines. As you make your way towards ridgelines, crossing suspension bridges, you can get dramatic highland sights of the Himalayas. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Deboche.

Day 20

Trek from Debouche to Namche Bazaar|3,440m|

Finally, the trekking trip presents a down-hill serpentine of the trail that will take you back to Namche Bazaar. The terrain is easy and gives amazing serenity and Himalayan ambiance. Along the way, you can see many locals going about their way with caravans of goods, a contrast to the remote off-beaten paths that Khumbu presents that are more often quite isolated. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Namche.

Day 21

Trek from Namche to Lukla |2,800m|

From Namche, you will have a relatively easy trekking trip downhill back towards Lukla. You will be trekking once again through the alpine forests of the national park, which you will exit at Monjo. Along the way, you will pass Phakding to reach Lukla. Overnight stay at the guesthouse at Lukla.

Day 22

Morning Flight to Kathmandu from Lukla

You will bid the Everest peaks goodbye for the last time today as you catch your early flight back to Kathmandu. Overnight stay at the Hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 23

Departure day

Approximately three hours before your scheduled flight, you will be dropped back at the airport for your departure.

Things to keep in mind

Cancellations

The cancellation and refund policy of Activ Retreats is previously well-defined. The organization is not liable for any refunds or reimbursements if a customer decides to cancel or withdraw from the trip for any reason. This means that once the trip has started, the company will not return the money you paid for it.

Nonetheless, consumer deposits are valid until the customer is prepared to make another travel reservation. Customers also have the option of changing the individual who will be traveling with them. If the customer must cancel or postpone the trip for personal reasons or because of unavoidable circumstances, the company will not be held liable for reimbursements.

The cancellation of a trip may be caused by unforeseen events including weather conditions, natural disasters, canceled flights, strikes, wars, riots, quarantines, government action, or poor health problems of a group member.

The Company demands written notice from the customer for any cancellations. The day the written cancellation is received by the company will serve as the date of the cancelled trip. 100% of the total fee may be refunded if a consumer cancels the trip one month before the departure date.


The Contract

A renowned and fully accredited business, Activ Retreats is officially registered with numerous national and international agencies, as well as with various departments of the Government of Nepal. Our business is located in Thamel, Kathmandu, and we work hard to give our clients from all over the world top-notch services.

Visas and Passports:

Passengers must have their current passport and the necessary visas for the destination country. Also, we urge our clients to confirm that their passports are valid for at least an additional six months after the end of their trip. Travelers’ carelessness with regard to visa paperwork and passports will not hold the company responsible if they are deported or denied entry to the nation while on their trip.

Travel Insurance

It is a major requirement of Activ Retreats that you have your travel insurance covered. Medical insurance, air ambulance service, and helicopter rescue services are all required, for this is a Himalayan nation and there are major issues of unfavorable circumstances in high altitudes. Also to be on the safe side, we also strongly advise our clients to purchase cancellation insurance. Please be sure your insurance policies offer complete protection and include the majority of the trip activities you engage in.

Prior to the trip, we will need a copy of your insurance documentation as evidence. If you are unable to give us with the insurance certificate for different reasons, you will be required to sign a suitable policy or agreement right away. However, if for any reason you are unable to do it, you will be prohibited. If you are unable to give us with the insurance certificate for whatever reason, you will be required to sign a suitable policy or agreement right away. But, you won’t be allowed to continue your journey if you are unable to do it because of unfavorable circumstances. Also, you won’t be eligible for a refund for any services that weren’t rendered.

Flexibility

The unique tours provided by Activ Retreats include demanding activities with inherent dangers. Customers must accept the risks because the company is not liable for mishaps or unforeseen circumstances in the Himalayas. Passengers must respect the authority of the trip leader, be adaptable, and be aware that changes may take place while they are on the trip. Throughout the journey, the corporation has the authority to accept or refuse customers, and those who break the law won’t get their money back. Customers must fill out a form and pay a 20% non-refundable deposit (or 50% for trips to Tibet and Bhutan) to reserve a tour; the remaining balance is required upon arrival in Kathmandu.

Payment Methods

The business provides bank transfers and credit cards (Master/Visa/American Express/Union Pay/JCB/SCT Card) as two practical and secure methods of payment. While completing the booking application form, the client must specify the payment method in full and give the company all necessary credit card information. However, the remaining balance (80% for trips to Nepal and 50% for trips to Tibet and Bhutan) must be paid in cash to the company before leaving for the trip from Kathmandu.

Trip Amendments:

Please note that the following conditions apply to amendments for trips listed on this site:

Amendments requested at least 60 days prior to the trip incur a fee of USD 50/person.

Amendments requested less than 60 days before the trip follow the cancellation policy and charges.

Changes in trip price during booking and amendments may apply and may be levied by third-party service providers.

Additional administration fees of USD 20/booking per change apply for any additions to the original booking.

Amendments cannot be made within 10 days of the original trip departure, and if made, a minimum fee of USD 50 applies.


Health Conditions

The Company requires a well-documented medical certificate from an accredited medical facility prior to the start of the trip in order to assure the safety and health of our travelers. While making a reservation, the company must be advised of any medical concerns or issues. The Company will not pay for any medical or evacuation costs, and it won’t be held accountable for accidents. Prior to making a reservation with us, we advise patients to visit their doctors for a complete examination and vaccination. If necessary, clients may also ask for additional services while on their trip or staying in the destination nation.

Weather Conditions

Customers should be informed that unpredictably bad weather might cause flight delays or cancellations in hilly areas like Everest, Mustang, and Kanchenjunga. The company reserves the right to change the itinerary or mode of transportation without incurring additional costs and will pay for lodging and meals while flights are being booked. The Company is not liable for missing foreign flights, expenses related to altitude sickness, or any other unforeseen events and participants are responsible for all costs incurred. The client will be responsible for any additional costs, although the company will help with alternate arrangements. Although giving information, the company is not liable for unforeseen circumstances and the company chief may, in writing, waive these booking requirements. Legal agreements are controlled by Nepalese law, and the Company Chief alone has the authority to change them.

Note: All of the Terms and Conditions have been prepared in accordance with and are subject to the laws of the Government of Nepal. Hence, the only person with the power to interfere and make changes is the company’s CEO.
