Food
Albanian and Montenegrin cuisine is distinctly fresh and vegetable-heavy, with excellent cheeses, yogurts & olive oil. Seafood is ample and delicious near the coast, while in the mountains, it's often lamb or goat. You'll have the opportunity to try local specialties and experience traditional Balkan hospitality, often including a welcoming shot of rakia (local brandy).
Most special diets - vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free - can be accommodated, but if you require a combination of special requirements or have severe food allergies of any sort, please check with us before signing up so that we can ensure that this trip is a good fit for you.
Accommodation
Accommodations vary throughout the trip and include guest houses, hotels, and eco camps. For example, in Theth, you'll stay at a Hotel. In Perast, you'll stay at a Villa. In Valbona Valley, you'll stay at Neo Kulla. Expect comfortable but sometimes basic accommodations, especially in more remote areas.
*This is an active trip with lots of time outdoors. You'll be in run gear most of the time and you don't need much in the way of dressy clothes, but we suggest at least one nicer outfit to wear to a couple of our nicer dinners.
*Any type of luggage is fine, but remember: no one ever wishes they’d brought more stuff! Stick to the essentials and pack only what you need. If your luggage is too big or too heavy for you to lift it all yourself, it’s too much stuff. This is Europe... expect to carry it up and down stairs!
*Have some sort of ‘day bag,’ whether it’s a small backpack, messenger bag, etc. It should be big enough to carry money, a camera, a water bottle, and a jacket – something you can keep with you in the vehicle.
*You don’t need a different running outfit for every day. You can easily re-wear a few items throughout the trip, and a rinse-out in the shower keeps things clean enough (our mid-trip farmhouse stay has plenty of outdoor space, sunshine and a clothesline!). But, please do not plan or rely on the chance to do proper laundry.
Clothes
*3-4 pairs running shorts + 1 pair running tights or pants
*3-4 short sleeve running shirts/tank tops + jog bras and 1-2 long sleeve running shirts
*3-4 non running shirts/tops
*2 pairs pants or jeans or skirts
*1 warm jacket (down or fleece)
*1 rain jacket (can double as a running jacket - we recommend full waterproof in case of bad weather in the mountains)
*1 lightweight jacket or pullover
*Underwear
*1 set of sleepwear
Accessories + Shoes
*1 pair trail running shoes + 1 pair flip flops + 1 pair non-running shoes (you will occasionally run on pavement, but not enough to warrant an additional pair of road shoes, in our opinion!).
*6-7 pairs socks
*Running hat *Warm hat/beanie
*watch / charger
*Sunglasses
*Day bag
*Swimsuit
*Shower towels are provided by the hotels, but please bring a small pack towel for sweat/rain/post-run river plunges/Adriatic swimming
*Gloves
*Large handheld (16+oz) or hydration running pack (we recommend hydration packs because it makes it easy to carry extra layers, camera, a snack, etc)
Toiletries
*Shampoo/soap/conditioner
*Toothbrush/toothpaste
*Brush/comb
*Few travel packages of tissues (emergency/backup TP)
*Feminine products
*Razor
*Contacts/solution if needed
*Sunblock
*Moleskin or bandaids – we’ll have some of this for the group, but blisters are a common problem and it’s good to have some of your own on hand
*Any other medication you may need (we carry a full first aid kit for emergency situations, but recommend that you pack anything that you anticipate needing).
Documents
*Passport (US citizens must have 6 months validity when you enter Europe)
*1-2 credit/debit cards (make sure to call your bank the week before departure and tell them the dates that you will be overseas, and make sure to tell the that you will be in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia along with any other stops that you have planned. This way they won’t put a security hold on your card). *Beginning in 2024, travelers from the US, UK and Canada will also require an ETIAS authorization to enter the EU. The launch date has yet to be confirmed.
Other Stuff
*Phone/camera + charger
*Reading/writing material
*a few large ziplocs (useful both for waterproofing your phone in the rain, and to carry out any toilet paper you may use on the trail)
*Ear plugs if you are a light sleeper/your roommate snores *Electrical adapter: you'll need the European style with two round prongs.

Each person on our small, multinational team brings a unique set of running abilities, travel experience, and guiding expertise to the table, but something that we all have in common is an addiction to exploration, a borderline obsession with running, and a love of helping others experience the world in this very unique way. Our guides are certified Wilderness First Responders, practice Leave No Trace principles, and have guided well over 200 running trips combined. When you join a trip you’ll be traveling, running, and exploring with at least one (if not 2 or 3) of us.

Running: Grunas Waterfall (5 miles / 600m) Blue Eye Hike (3 miles / 550 ft)
Today kicks off our journey deeper into the Accursed Mountains of the Dinarica mountain range. We know that life happens, and on occasion a participant will have to back out of a trip. As most of our costs are paid well in advance, we have set a cancellation policy that applies to all trips. You should obtain travel insurance to cover potential cancellations on your part.
If you cancel:
Within 30 days of signup (but more than 90 days from departure): Full refund
90+ days from the trip start date (but after the 30 day grace period): Deposits are non-refundable
61-90 days from the trip start date: 50% of total payment refunded**
60 days or less from the trip start date: No refunds
*If you register using a transfer credit, you may transfer again without penalty within 30 days of signup but will not be eligible for a refund
**This only applies to participants who have paid their balances on time. If you do not pay the balance by the due date and cancel after the fact, your deposit is non-refundable.
What if we cancel the trip?
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had never cancelled a trip and we hope that going forward we never have to again. But, it is a possibility and here is what happens if it happens:
If we cancel a trip due to low participant numbers, you will be notified no later than 60 days prior to departure and will receive the option of a full refund or transfer to an alternate trip.
If a trip is canceled at the last minute due to external events outside our reasonable control (natural disasters, terrorism, etc) we will issue full refunds less any unrecoverable costs. This type of scenario is unlikely but always a possibility - get that travel insurance!
A $600 deposit will hold your spot. Balances are due three months prior to departure.
The Albania-Montenegro mountain range offers one of Europe’s last untouched wilderness experiences. This Balkans running tour takes you through stunning landscapes where you can still find solitude and breathtaking nature.
Albania, now one of Europe’s safest and most welcoming destinations, combines the allure of the unknown with incredible hospitality and landscapes that will make you fall in love with the region.
The run tour price includes pre-trip communication & guidance, airport transfers, 7 nights accommodation, all meals from dinner on the first day to breakfast on the final day, transportation, drivers, experienced running guides, local logistics team, organized supported runs, a rafting trip, drinking water, and Rogue Expeditions swag.
Almost everything is covered for your Balkan running adventure!
This Balkans run tour is designed for experienced runners with a good fitness level. The longest run is about 9 miles with significant elevation gain, and some days involve long hikes up to 12 miles with 4,000 ft of elevation gain. Multiple distance options are always available for our run days, but the two days of hiking are point to point and require the fitness to complete the full route (or skip and transfer by van to the next accomodation). You should be comfortable with consecutive days of mountain terrain and significant elevation changes.
Expect diverse and challenging terrain throughout your Balkans running tour. You’ll encounter mountain trails, forest paths, rocky terrain, and some road running. The routes include single-track trails, dirt roads, and possibly some paved sections. Be prepared for rough and technical terrain, especially in the Albanian Alps.
Your Balkans run tour includes activities such as rafting on the Tara River, exploring historical sites like Fort St. Andrija, and experiencing local culture and cuisine. You’ll also have time to relax and recover in beautiful settings like Skadar Lake and the Valbona Valley.
Weather can vary significantly given the diverse terrain. Generally, expect mild to warm days and cooler nights. Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden changes and potential rain during your Balkans running tour.
